SOCIAL - WHATS COMING UP?

Our last Social Outing was on Tuesday 25th May and was a day trip to Huskisson where we had firstly had a look at the Lady Denman Museum. From there we moved over to the Huskisson RSL Club where we were catered for at lunch time with a choice of two dishes. The outlook over Jervis Bay from the windows of the Club begged for a nice day.
Further down the track, fro Social Outings, your Social Committee, at our April meeting, surveyed the members present to see if you would be interested in a Sydney Harbour Cruise with a seafood buffet for lunch. We mentioned that because this was out of the ordinary there would be extra costs and all sheets returned were positive by seventy seven members.
The date we would put to you is the 23rd September 2010. This is a Thursday and the cost to you would be $25 per person with the balance paid by your Sub-Branch as always. Names and monies will be taken at our July meeting to give time to book our numbers.
Be sure you can attend on the day as there will not be any refunds due to forward bookings having to be made and paid.
Your Social Committee will keep you informed as we get closer.

PENSION MENTION
The government has endorsed the four recommendations of the Matthew's Report into the indexation of Military and Commonwealth Superannuation. This means that those on Superannuation Pensions indexed by the Consumer Price Index (C.P.I.) - whereas Welfare and Age Pensions are indexed at a higher rate (the greater of C.P.I or Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI) or Male Total Average Weekly Earnings (MTAWE)) and pre-2004 MP'S and High Court Judges pensions are wage based indexed to the salaries of serving backbench M.P.

In the Period 1989 - 2008, military superannuation pensions rose by 68%, age pensions rose by 130% and those of retired MP'S rose by 140%!

The purpose of Pension Indexation is to maintain the purchasing power of YOUR pension. Until 1997 the Government acted to maintain the purchasing power of Age and other welfare pensions by changing indexation to CPI or MTAWE whichever was the greater. More recently it included another index factor, the New Pensionary and Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI).

Nothing however has been done for Military Superannuation, even though six parliamentary inquiries have recommended a form of wage based indexation. The Chair of recent government committees said: "It is hard to explain to Commonwealth superannuants why their pension, to which they contributed during their working life, should fall behind the pension increases of those who have generally not made provision for their retirement."

On the death of a member in receipt of Military Superannuation the remaining partner receives about 63% of the former members entitlement. A politicians surviving partner receives about 84% of that entitlement. This is despite the fact that serving members of the ADF pay a higher percentage of their income into the Super Fund than do politicians. Both payments come from the same source. IS THIS FAIR??
